ABOUT LWG
The Leather Working Group (LWG) was formed in April 2005 to promote sustainable and appropriate environmental management practices in the leather industry. The objective of this multi-stakeholder group is to develop and maintain a protocol that assesses the environmental compliance and performance of tanneries and promotes sustainable and appropriate environmental business practices in the leather industry. The group seeks to improve the tanning industry by creating alignment with environmental priorities, bringing visibility to best practices, and providing suggested guidelines for continuous improvement.
LWG Objectives
LWG Audit Protocol
The environmental audit protocol was developed and refined in conjunction with members, involving brands, tanners, and suppliers. The protocol is seen as a dynamic improvement tool and is regularly reviewed by LWG members to ensure it is both challenging, yet realistic and achievable. Its aim is to address important issues and reflect technological improvements or changes in the industry.
Pontuação e classificações
The protocol provides a scoring system that rewards good environmental practices. Those who achieve a good score may receive Gold, Silver, or Bronze ratings. These ratings are then published (voluntarily) on the LWG website.
Many tanneries, brands, and end users use this list as a sourcing tool to select preferred suppliers from medal-rated tanneries.
